A birthday girl, a big boy, studying chaos & sewing

Wowzers! Life has been busy and non-stop, since June! What happened to the doggone laze daze of summer?  My teen added another year to the teen years, and is now 15!  Her birthday and the end of year dance recital once again collided.  I was proud, full of beauty, grace and confidence, this daughter of mine…maybe too much confidence.....hmmmmmm.
There is definite room for improvement for this careless child of mine, but I love my daughter with all my heart.  I consider myself blessed to have such a personality. As the little birdie dreams of faraway places, I devise plans to clip her wings and keep her close (insert conspiring Mama laugh).
A simple sweet cake by my not so simple, but sweet friend Brandi! Sweet 16 is going to be off the hinges!

After the dance recital, Sean eagerly awaits the cutting of the cake.

Sean is 100% potty trained…no thanks to his Mama!  I was against it….he wasn’t ready, yada yada yada, Ms. Tracey, well, disagreed. I thought I was going to prove a point and he’d still be in the process of being trained by the time he was 3. Well, she had him trained within a month and a half, completely, no accidents. If Sean is in the middle of play, he will stop and go potty!  What the what!  Simply amazed! While, I was reading and researching,  dude she just got down to business and got ‘er done! We are blessed to have her, she’s the best!  She also took Sean to get his first haircut…it was…a surprise.  After the initial day or two of shock, I now love it!  He now goes with his daddy on Saturdays to get haircuts. My little big boy.  The vestiges of babyhood are fading away….my heart hurts. L  But, alas he hangs onto that darn paci at naptime and bedtime!
Haircut time!

My big boy on the 4th of July

What does a Mama that has her plate fully loaded do? Well, she applies to grad school, gets accepted, and madly studies for the GRE of course! What is wrong with me! Who is this overachiever, I don’t understand her! Extreme napping, now that’s a pursuit! I studied, relearned, and study some more. I was so wound up and tired, the day of the test I just crashed!  I gave it to Jesus, I literally said “Jesus, please take the wheel” under my breath of course, didn’t want to get kicked out. Well, I’m happy to say I got my scores! Happy, happy, joy, joy! Eighteen years ago, fall 1993 I began the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree, now exactly eighteen years later, I’m pursuing my Master’s. I sure know how to space things out, my kid’s, and my education. This is the best I’ve felt about choices concerning my career in ions!
Gosh, so many challenges in this llittle life of mine! My husband and I have been split for a year and half now, sorry it was on the hush, but you never know with these things. But, the split affects every aspect of my life, and I just want and need to be honest.  I love and respect some honesty! My world is not all good, all the time! I sure wish it were all cakes and giggles!  If anything maybe my situation can help someone else, who knows, but you will find no façade here. Though life is not a certain way, there’s still happiness and peace to be found, as hard as it may seem at times. There are lots of things in my life to be thankful for, though it has hurtled itself into crash dummy mode, and sometimes I have to turn my head just right, and squint my eyes just so, and purse my lips like this, and aha!…there it is…plenty to be thankful for. Despite the split we are very amicable, cause I’m cool like that!  Though divorce was never a part of my perfect life plans, I’m not focused on what is undone, but what needs to be done.  I have a ship to keep afloat, and a couple of blessings that need a strong, solid, loving Mama, I’m up to the task.  It’s not what I know, but WHO I know that makes all the difference.  Once again, my friends showed up.  No judgment, just support.  Thank you for asking, reaching out, and demanding to know, when I would have kept it all in and might have been consumed, I appreciated your concern , insistence,  well just your general noiseness, LOL!  No island free of people for me. Thank you for the many calls, texts, QT, and good ole food, and much needed laughter! You might not have had the answers, but you’ve had the best ears ever, and you just simply cared.  You reached out, and I’m thankful. You show me what real friends are, and I want to grow up and be just like you! Love you! Amazing you are!  You were invaluable during this time.  I would name you individually, but I don’t want some friend snatcher to track you down and steal you from me, but you know who you are, simply because you were there.
Throughout all this I have sewn quite a few projects. I was included in the celebrations of births and birthdays, my favorite! Woo hoo! Sewing was done, people were pleased, and I felt really good! But atlas, perfection eludes me on this sewing front! I want it so bad!  No, project lacks it’s regrets and panic inducing moments, the embroidery machine with it’s bobbin issues, why did I choose that thread color, the air soluble markings, that are now permanently set by an errant iron, a misalignment on the name of a project, embroidery thread running out on the last letter of a project, and of course Hancock’s is closed at this hour, a Cheeto covered hand touching my nice pressed and finished burp cloth, a serger that mysteriously has a new thread breakage issue….SEAN  MICHAEL!!!!   But, gosh, darn you , Perfection you will be pursued and I will be faithful and diligent in that pursuance. I will hunt you down and bring you into humble submittance. Perfection, you will be mine, prepare to be a part of my crafting! Know this! But, hey if all else fails, I will add this disclaimer to all my sewing projects; All items are handcrafted and despite my best efforts slight variations and imperfections may occur, which only enhance the beauty and uniqueness of the product, making it “one of a kind”.    :  )
The projects......

A stitched up gift

Hey guy's! I meant to post this on March 27th...but pure laziness got the best of me!  The rain slapping against the window panes, beckoned me with the call of naptime, and I, we obliged. Rain and sleep you just can't beat it!

Sean, was invited to a birthday party...fun!  Here's some pics of him at the party. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. That's his bestie, Lil' Derrick,  sitting next to him.

So, what for a gift...??? Do add to the masses of toys she'll accumulate...or do I do something original? Will it come off cheesy and cheap...hmmmm.  I decided to go with a personalized gift...not because of cost, but because people love them, and I love making them. Win win, right?
I used my bias tape maker for the very first time, well worth it! It's amazing, perfect bias binding is just cranked out in no time flat, no more burnt fingers. By the way, bias tape is the white trim around the bottom of the bloomers.

The Mom called me later on that evening to say she loved the gift! AWESOME!

And, I've once again I had the honor of fulfilling gift requests! And here are the gifts I crafted.

3 burp cloths. I love, love embellishing burp cloths!

I was given this fabric with the request of creating a boppy cover.

The boppy cover!

The contrasting back of the boppy cover.

And with fabric leftover, I couldn't resist making additional gifts....

The Collegiate font I used to embroider the name was a complete pain! It took a lot of
thread, and so much fabric showed through. So I stitched over the name again to get fuller coverage...
it's all good now, but further testing is definitely needed!

I embellished the back with my latest purchase.

All neatly folded and simply tied with a ribbon, ready for the mommie-to-be!

The future holds more baby gifts....much fun sewing ahead! Until later....LOVE, PEACE & SEW!!!

Kimono style dress

Remember this?

Well, it became this! How cute is this little wonder!

I used a pattern from Amy Butler’s book Stitches for little ones.  I must say the too wordy instructions made this project a little difficult at times. I actually had completed the bodice of this dress and decided to scratch it and start over.  A cutting mistake or  a sewing mistake prevented the right side of the bodice from lining up.

See the trouble stop on the right.

So, I ripped the trouble spot apart and tried resewing, but to know avail……so I chopped it up as a loss and started over. I mean it’s really not a loss for someone that uses fabric remnants for appliqué right? I just wouldn’t want you to think that I just flawlessly execute my projects every time. I make mistakes all the time! My seam reaper is my bestie on this sewing  journey. Starting over was worth the effort,  the end result was just too cute and well constructed.  I just love the simple little details in this dress.
The cuffed sleeves with a V cute out. And double stitching.

The back bodice with a simple button closure.

The sides of the dress with the little vent.

The V neck with double stitching.

All, and all I'm pretty proud of this little number. Well, until next time….LOVE, PEACE and SEW!!!
